The HSCC 1000cc Formula 3 website

Welcome: the 'extra' website for 1000cc Formula 3 as run by the Historic Sports Car Club.   This website is purely to support our series and is produced by a HSCC racing member with the support of the Chairman of the Series.   Average number of unique visitors per month since we started is over 1000, keep coming back! This website is for you the competitor, helper or spectator; if you have anything to contribute then get in touch.

There are no membership forms or fees, no need to supply your details - all you need is an interest in 1000cc Formula 3 for any reseaon at all.

WHAT WE ARE ABOUT

Our aim is to provide a forum for F3 cars raced between 1/1/1964 and 31/12/1970, the cars known as the 'screamers'. We will provide additional information and services to that already provided by the Club and several other organisations; it is not a replacement for the HSCC Club website, it is an extra. All areas of the website will be open to Club members and non-members, to maintain and grow the following for these remarkable cars and the owners, drivers and numerous supporters involved with them.

For absolute confirmation of regulations, dates and venues always check with the Historic Sports Car Club website on www.hscc.org.uk

These cars currently race in the UK in the HSCC Classic Racing Cars series, Class D, at most of the best known and loved circuits, plus meetings abroad.  (Click here for the 2010 Classic Racing Car Regulations)

The cars also run in Europe in the Historic F3 1000cc European Trophy at superb circuits such as Magny-Cours, Spa, Nurburgring, and Dijon (click here for their website). The HSCC work closely with this organisation and arrange meetings with entries from both Clubs.

Several years ago the Peter Hanson Trophy was revived and in 2009 was staged over 3 rounds, encouraging even more cars onto grids, with a significant number of European competitors. The Trophy is open to all eligible 1000cc F3 cars and runs alongside the HSCC Classic Racing Cars Championship.

For 2010, the exciting news was the inclusion of a 1000cc race at Historic Monaco, run two weeks before the annual Formula One weekend. Read nore about this event on the NEWS page.

Following the disappointing news that 1000cc F3 would not be included in the 2012 event we can now confirm that our cars are very definitely racing in the 2014 Historic Monaco

A huge thank you for the efforts over a number of years to Chris Sharples and David Pullen of the HSCC, plus many others such as Francois Derossi, Geoffroy Rivet, Simon Hadfield, Rene Ligonet, Keith Messer for their efforts in convincing the Monaco organisers that 1000cc F3 deserved to be there. The story really began with David Pullen and Richard Urwin in the early 90s talking to the embryonic European Trophy organisers who subsequently decided to adopt the Technical Regulations already put into effect by the HSCC: without those early steps and the huge support from those two plus a small number of other regular drivers the class may have disappeared as could the European Trophy series.

IMPORTANT PRESS RELEASE FROM THE HSCC

News from the Historic Sports Car Club

Friday 25 February 2011

Formula 3 to be celebrated at Cadwell Park

The history of the Formula 3 category will be celebrated at Cadwell Park this Easter when the Historic Sports Car Club organises the Wolds Trophy Meeting at the Lincolnshire venue (Sunday/Monday 24/25 April).

This new two-day historic meeting will feature six races for Formula 3 cars, spanning thirty years of the category from the early post-war period through to the Ayrton Senna era of the early 1980s. Right through those decades, Cadwell Park was an important date on the Formula 3 schedule.

Launched today at Race Retro, the International Historic Motorsport Show, the Wolds Trophy is designed to be an annual historic festival for Cadwell Park to match existing high-profile race meetings at the other MotorSport Vision venues of Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Snetterton.

As well as a full programme of saloon car, sports car and single-seater racing from the HSCC, the Wolds Trophy will host six races covering four generations of Formula 3 car. Through history, Formula 3 has been the most successful proving ground for future Grand Prix drivers, with drivers like Ayrton Senna, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Damon Hill, David Coulthard and Jenson Button all establishing their reputation in Formula 3.

In action over two days of racing at Easter will be cars from the 500cc Owners’ Association for the cars from the late 1940s. These spectacular motorbike-engined cars will make a rare visit to Cadwell Park for two races in their season-long schedule. It was this category that was instrumental in the start of car racing at Cadwell Park when, in 1953, a grid of 500cc F3 cars was added to a traditional motorbike meeting. Sir Stirling Moss OBE first made his name racing this type of car soon after the Second World War.

Moving on an era will be two races for the Peter Hanson Trophy for 1000cc Formula 3 cars, the category that thrilled fans with incredibly close racing from 1964 to 1970. Then, to take the story through the 1970s will be two races for the HSCC Classic F3 Championship for the 1600cc and 2-litre F3 cars
In addition, the meeting will feature two races for Formula Junior cars, representing the class that took over from F3 as the major international junior single-seater category between 1959 and 1963.

“I’m delighted that the HSCC has chosen Cadwell Park for its Formula 3 celebration event,” said Jonathan Palmer, Chief Executive of MotorSport Vision. “Cadwell has a long association with F3, as 500cc motorcycle-engined Formula 3 machines were the first cars to compete at the circuit in the 1950s. It’s a fantastic driver’s circuit, oozing with character, and an exhilarating place to drive an F3 car. I have fond memories of winning there in 1981, and of Ayrton Senna crashing at the Mountain in 1983! It’s also a fantastic opportunity for spectators to enjoy some wonderful period machinery in a period circuit environment - no doubt it’s going to be a fabulous weekend.”

JUSTIN HALER

You may remember that in 2010 we passed on a message from Justin who was writing a new book about the Screamer Era. Justin reported on 1000cc F3 for Autosport in period when Autosport was in its' early years. We are sorry to have to write the sad news that Justin passed away on January 16th following a short illness. He lived in South Africa.

Justin had been in contact with numerous people, and carried out some of his research via this website, for his new book which was intended for publication in the summer of 2011.

We would like to extend our sincere condolences to Justin’s family and friends.

CADWELL PARK 24/25 APRIL - SPECIAL NEWS 1000CC F3 STAND-ALONE RACES

We are pleased to announce on behalf of the Club that following much lobbying we have a stand-alone double-header (two races) for 1000cc F3 cars agreed for this Cadwell Park meeting over the Easter Sunday/Monday. It is likely that practice and race 1 will be Sunday with the bonus second race on Monday. You can organise additional practice on Saturday direct with MSV.

Please try hard to support this meeting to promote the cause for our screamers as the more entrants we have the more likely it is we will be offered stand-alone 1000cc F3 races, and possibly double-headers, at other meetings in the future. We need to show our support and commitment to the Club so please try very hard to be there.

IMPORTANT NEWS - TYRES FOR 2011

Following the request for views on tyres for the Classic Racing Cars series by David Pullen in early December 2010 , you should have received his recent letter sent out by the HSCC office on the future tyre Regulations. Please look at the side bar for the button 'TYRES 2011' to see a copy of this letter in full PLUS scans of the AVON drawings that will be used to check tyre pattern conformity.
